There has been a rise in the number of African startups from the ten participants in last year’s Y Combinator Accelerator 2021. Ahead of the demo days on August 31 and September 1, there are five Nigerian startups, of which Payhippo and Infiuss Health were recently confirmed, Zambian startup, Union54, Yemaachi Biotechnology from Ghana which is part of the recent addition, South African Floatpays, Morocco’s Freterium and Chari and three Egyptian startups.
The Nigerian startups are Mecho Autotech , an on-demand auto repair and maintenance platform, two fintech, PayHippo and Lemonade Finance, Infiuss Health, a health tech that democratizes remote access to patients and participants for clinical research studies across Africa, and Suplias, an e-commerce platform connecting thousands of retail outlets to consumer goods manufacturers in Africa.
Union54, the first Zambian startup to join YC Accelerator, is a member-led association of African fintech pulling together to dismantle borders and make money borderless with specialties in debit cards, payment gateway, wallets, mobile wallets, etc. The Egyptian startups that are joining this cohort are Amenli, Odiggo, and ShipBlu.
Y Combinator provides seed funding for startups. The accelerator program works with startups on their ideas and helps founders deal with investors and acquirers. Mono, Blueloop, Vendease, Dayra, Djamo, Kidato, NowPay, Flextock, Sendbox, and Prospa were the 10 participants of the Y Combinator Winter 2021 batch.
