Logistics in Africa faces lots of challenges. Apart from damaged road connections, there is the issue of unreasonably high prices charged by drivers. I would not blame them as they need to consider various factors to arrive at the price charged. Due to other glitches, clients might not get their goods for days, leaving them in a state of panic. The problems are just too numerous. Africa has a long way to go in bridging the wide gap that exists in the logistics sector. However, individuals and corporate bodies are striving to build an innovative solution tailored to address the issue in the industry.
In 2018, the World Bank Logistics Performance Index placed South Africa, Rwanda, Kenya, and Côte d’Ivoire as the top 4 best-performing countries in Africa. Meanwhile, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe were at the bottom four. It is no surprise we find Amitruck in one of the best-performing countries, Kenya.
The solution

The Kenyan logistics solution, Amitruck, was founded in 2018 by Mark Mwangi. With over three years of experience across the board, he dared to change the narrative in the logistics sector. The startup connects clients (cargo owners) with truck drivers. Ensuring cost-effective, efficient, and secured service delivery up to the last mile digitally.
While improving customer satisfaction, turnover rate, and sales conversion, stakeholders can enjoy the benefits of adding value to the supply chain. The solution also addresses the issue of trust and transparency. How? Achievement transpires by cutting off expensive middlemen. More so, the startup’s ability to vet drivers, vehicles and also insure goods in transit has increased security. Everyone is at peace, especially the clients.
Amitruck has recorded 5000+ registered vehicles, 200+ clients, and 20,000+ deliveries made to date. There are 12 employees currently working with the startup to accomplish its goal. The key players include – John Kamau, Software Engineer; Yuki Ouchi, Head of growth; Brian Ngure, Chief Technical Officer; Mukeli Matei, UI/UX Designer, just to mention a few.
The stakeholders
There’s a uniqueness about this solution which is the separate platform created for each of its stakeholders. As customers, there’s an app specially built to solve any problem regarding your logistics. You can find vetted, reliable trucks to transport your goods without fretting. For drivers, there’s a separate platform to operate on. The app connects you with clients and gives you the privilege to quote for work on your terms. That’s superb! The level of organisation is top-notch.
Moving Ahead
Amitruck has received funding from 3 investors – Dynamo and Plug, Play Tech Center, and GreenTec Capital. Over the years, that startup has raised an undisclosed amount in funding over three rounds to increase its client base.
Amitruck moved ahead of its competitors because it leveraged tech innovation to proffer solutions in the logistics sector. Techtrend Africa hopes that as this solution is fast-tracking, it reaches other parts of the continent in a short while. Also, the startup received some fundings. Hopefully, it should aid in improving its existing products as well as creating more solutions.
