Carol Obura is a high achiever who does not relent until she gets the best. She is a BSc—holder in statistics from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Carol had a burning passion for her course of study, this made her top the class with first-class honours. During her undergraduate, she was also getting hands-on skills from the Zalego Institute of Technology and Innovation. Carol earned a certificate in programming and web development. She also joined the Andela learning community as an android associate developer. Opportunity comes to those who work for it, Carol won the Bertelsmann Scholarship data track to learn from Udacity. She wouldn’t stop there, she moved ahead to pay for more value.
In 2022, she earned a nano degree in data analytics from Udacity. Additionally, Carol has certifications in python and machine learning from Dataquest.io. If there is anything worth noting, it’s her planning, consistency and hard work. She is aware of her interest, goes all out to learn and is ready to impact her community. As a junior statistician, Carol launched her practical tech journey at Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. Afterwards, she worked as a data scientist at SANCOM Ltd, Nairobi Kenya. Presently, Carol is unleashing her creative superpowers at Sama as a business analyst. She is a fellow at The Room, a platform that houses highly skilled tech experts from around the world. Carol Obura like any other techie has a story around her expertise. She began her journey with self-doubt and criticism coming from herself. Coupled with impostor syndrome, Carol felt she wasn’t capable of handling her assigned role. The amazing thing about this phase for her is that she turned that into an opportunity to become better and improve. Challenging phases are the time to grow better. Carol noted that Africa is rich in young, vibrant and talented human resources. The change that the continent will experience if these talents are grooves will be mind-blowing and far-reaching in all sectors. A combination of a society knowledgeable about the potential in tech and techies ready to create technological solutions will place Africa at a developmental advantage. Fully incorporating technology into the policy-making system will lead to better governance in Africa.
Views on Gender
Carol pointed out that the gender gaps in tech are closing up as females are taking up roles in big projects like males. Leaders are people who take up new challenges as an adventure. Carol worked on a complex predictive project with her peers during her undergraduate. Things were unclear at the beginning, but with dedication and hard work, they were able to deliver an incredible result. Carol had the opportunity to present the results to international experts and she came home applauded with praise and positive feedback. What more could this be than a success story of grit?
