While many people enjoy music, the regulations from the Nigerian government have a say in this situation. It is no longer news that the Central Bank of Nigeria has placed a limit on Nigeria’s card-making foreign transactions, and it is getting hard to pay $1. The belief is that these policies will allow local brands to thrive, and international businesses will look inward to operate. The music industry also needs a sustainable alternative.
The Alternative
Drift, a product aiming to address this lingering issue offers music lovers and producers the opportunity to transact in Naira. The founders believe creating an alternative to dollar payment platforms and giving the same quality will be an advantage to African listeners with what they desire. Drift was founded in late 2021 by two music lovers, Adams and Cephas, with a mission to offer Africans an alternative with a local payment option while they get buzzing jams.
The product is in web and mobile (iOS and Android) applications. Early this year, the founders started testing the in beta with all determination to go live today. While discussing with Adams, he highlighted his personal experience with an international streaming platform. Adams said he made his first payment, but his card got rejected while trying to keep his subscription running for the next month. He discussed with Cephas, and Drift became a thing from that day.
How Does Drift Work?
The product focuses on delivering the best to its users. Producers and music producers will be given more flexibility in terms of control. Users can listen to their favourite artists from anywhere in the world. Drift supports English, Spanish, French and Arabic. The product will provide a platform for over 170 million African music while giving local artists access to the international market. We need to bring our local product out to compete with the existing brands to get what we desire.
The entertainment industry keeps growing, and new artists are trading their skills for delightful sounds. While some find the CBN regulations to be affecting their business, we feel it will give rise to more solutions internally. When Africa starts to create and import less, we will generate more and grow like developed countries.
