After the Federal Government of Nigeria banned Twitter operations in June, Koo, an Indian microblogging and social networking app, has launched an operation in Nigeria. Less than a week after Twitter’s suspension, the Federal Government had opened an official account on Koo.
Speaking at the launch, Aprameya Radhakrishna, co-founder and CEO of Koo said: “Nigeria is a country with a rich cultural background and heritage. While it is an English-speaking country, we feel it is important for the people to communicate in their local language in the digital space which will further enrich the local culture of Nigeria. Working with Nigerian people, koo has been able to appreciate the historical and cultural nuances of the country. We would encourage a positive attitude on the platform, making us partners in progress.”
He also disclosed that Nigeria is the first country outside India that Koo has moved to, and in the last two months, has seen about 200,000 downloads.
Koo is a microblogging platform that was launched in 2020 and allows users to share personal updates and opinions across numerous topics of interest. Koo was one of the apps awarded as a winner in the Aatmanirbhar App challenge held in Aug 2020, where 24 apps were selected from among 7000 applicants.
