Oluchi Okpala’s Perspective on Tech
Oluchi is one of the African talents making a positive impact locally and internationally. Africa is blessed with talented individuals capable of redefining our story. Oluchi identifies the rigid mentality of most Nigerians about getting white-collar jobs. Apart from earning money and living a good life, one needs to make an impact. She feels we can actually become job creators and problem solvers. Sadly, very few think of making a global impact. Most people keep blaming and waiting for the government to provide jobs. Chimo! Na table shaking be dis o, no vex! Our mentality and attitude towards life are inarguably the product of our society. Some females refrained from tech to avoid being tagged as a career women. Some want to marry a rich man and live with a baby girl laugh.
Oluchi Okpala is a performer
The few who were bold to bell the cat are performing exceedingly well. The percentage of women present on tech companies’ boards of directors is as low as 32%. This is an indication that a gender margin exists in the tech field. Although, the narratives are changing as most tech startups are trying to balance the ratio. If the advanced countries can do it, we can achieve the feat too. Oluchi sees a great void of technology in the housing industry.
Getting an apartment in Lagos is not a small task. E go con be like Guinness world search, e no easy. We can do better, all it needs is a tech influence and the story will change. Oluchi states that to open the door to success in tech, every techie needs double Ps and Cs. Passion, patience, communication and collaboration are the keys to survival. Newbies in tech need to learn that tech is full of breakfast when starting out.
Rejections and failures are part of the process. A techie who keeps learning and executing solution-centred projects will feast on a buffet of opportunities. Oluchi feels the way to educate techies is by creating an e-learning platform. This platform will provide them opportunities to build a real life. Care to know why she is so much into making impacts? Her favourite quote at work “Don’t treat people as bad as they are, treat them as good as you are”.
