Orcas Startup
Orcas actually started in 2013 with the name CairoSitters. The startup was founded by four wonderful individuals, Hossam Taher, Amira El Gharib, Omar Fayez and Ahmed Ismail. Hossam Taher is known as the CEO.
It all started with a simple booklet which was distributed amongst parents by the four co-founders. These parents were their objective customers. At the beginning of this startup, all the four could contribute to make the startup a reality was $1000. And the booklet was all they could do as at then.
This booklet came into play after Orcas was able to register a substantial number of registered babysitters and tutors. In 2014, the startup created a Facebook page which was used as a means to obtain customers. The two major Challenges the startup encountered was how to raise funds and build a customer-based supply.
Orcas of Today
Finally, in 2017, the founders decided to give way to technology and the Orcas Mobile app was officially launched. According to research, at the time of launch Orcas had over 1000 babysitters and tutors and over 2000 recurrent Customers. This technology launch made it easier to expand the customer supply base.
Also interestingly the Orcas of today have been able to raise $500,000 in Pre-Series A. A funding round led by Egypt’s largest Venture Capital fund Algebra Ventures and joined by cross-border edutech fund NFX Ventures. El Gharib, co-founder and growth officer, stated that the startup plans to use the investment to develop its product offering and scale the company. With the end goal of optimising the user experience for stakeholders.
Indeed, this mobile app is a better version of Orcas providing its customers with trusted babysitters and specialized tutors digitally. It also provides flexible and rewarding job opportunities for the youths. Young University students or even graduates can register as tutors or Babysitters and get paid for a job well done.
Orcas have also helped the community by solving the problem of low academic performance and tight schedules for parents. It has been recorded that children who have tutors tend to outshine those who have access to just conventional instructional methods.
The journey thus far
Currently, Orcas operates in Cairo, Alexandria, El Gouna and the North Coast, with over 20,000 Students on the Application. Although Hossam Taher, the CEO, said they’re currently working on growing Orcas to become the biggest school in Africa. In terms of hours taught in the world by operating in developing countries.
Another co-founder named Amira has said that Orcas is launching a new feature called Discoveries by summertime. This new feature would enable students to discover and explore lots of intriguing activities like coding, music, culture, art etc. Just as the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
