Jumia or Konga?
Jumia and Konga are three-headed online champs: a marketplace largely dominated by third-party sellers, a logistics arm that handles shipments and deliveries, and a payments platform. Both of these companies leverage technology to simplify buying and selling online. Amazingly, all the necessities of life can be delivered to your doorstep with just one click.
In 2021, Jumia web visitors were over 147 million in Africa, Konga recorded over 2.5 million web visitors worldwide. Konga operates only in Nigeria, while Jumia has extended its product beyond Africa. With Jumia Global, you can shop abroad and have them delivered to your doorstep.
Worthy to note, the difference in customers’ preferences alongside other factors contribute to their inclination towards a particular product. Here are some of the highlighted factors:
Web Visits

Jumia ranks 4,668 in global internet engagement, Konga ranks 21,077. In March 2021, Jumia recorded a total web visit of 9.87 million worldwide. Most visits were from Nigeria – 87.20%visits. Nonetheless, I was unable to get the most recent data with regards to Jumia web visits. In July 2021, Konga recorded about 2.5 million web visits worldwide 90% of the web visits are from Nigeria.
Nonetheless, Jumia is ranked higher than Konga in terms of global engagement. Even Jiji ranks higher than Konga. Well, that’s not our point of discussion today.
Membership
Jumia is free to use – registration, maintenance, or monthly fee is not required. Konga is not free to use. A membership fee is needed to become a seller on Konga. Sellers have the option to choose either based on what suits them.
Commission
Jumia charges a commission on each item you sell on the platform. A commission rate ranging from 5 -15% is charged based on the category of the item. More so, the commission fee Konga charges is a percentage of the selling value. For every item sold, the seller is charged based on the item sales value per category. Commission fees are as low as 3% on Konga.
Order Notification and Tracking

Jumia sends a one-time notification email after every order. Before the arrival of the order, customers receive continuous advertisement SMS. Konga sends a notification email complemented by SMS upon the completion of an order. Likewise, the name of the merchant is attached to the notification message. After shipment, customers receive a notification containing the tracking link that leads them to the order tracking page from Konga.
Note, if you would like to receive frequent notification about the state of your order, it is attainable with Konga. However, both parties notify buyers after successful order placement.
Fulfilling Orders and Warehousing
As a seller, Fulfillment by Konga (FBK) and Jumia Express allows you to store your products at their warehouses at a cost. Both companies execute packaging and shipment directly from their warehouse upon order placement. However, there are a few differences:
With Jumia, sellers who use warehousing services are charged monthly per item stored. Sellers will pay ₦3 per item in the small size category, ₦8 per item in the medium-size category, and ₦14 per item in the large size category.
Sellers pay:
- ₦157.5 for goods within 0 – 10kg
- ₦525 for goods within 10 – 25kg
- ₦840 for goods above 25kg.
Jumia charges sellers per item sold. The charges vary from #100-900 depending on the item category. Jumia does not allow sellers to deliver the items on their own. Jumia has a logistic team that supplies items to customers. Konga allow sellers who opted for warehousing service to enjoy the first three months free of charge. Subsequently, Konga charges sellers by the size of the item warehoused. The charges take effect once an item is successfully delivered.
Customers bear the cost of shipping. However, sellers carry the cost of shipping for items on free delivery. Also, Konga allows sellers to deliver items on their own. As a seller, you are to fix your shipping charge. The maximum amount a seller can charge for shipping is #3000. However, if you sell heavy items, Konga permits you to customize your shipment charges.
Therefore, preference and product category will determine the choice of Fulfilment by Konga or Jumia express. Also, if you would like to make deliveries yourself, only Konga offers you the option to do that. On the other hand, if you want to waive the self-delivery option, you can choose either Jumia or Konga.
Refund Policy
Jumia has a return policy of 7 days. Customers can return the item for the reasons stated. Konga also allows buyers to send back items that failed to meet the requirements stated while purchasing within seven days. However, Konga puts a restriction on returning some items to protect the sellers. Konga and Jumia both have a refund policy that also protects the seller. However, it appears that the Konga policy guards sellers a bit more.
If you think of creating an online store, Jumia and Konga are good e-commerce websites to use. The comparisons made above aim at guiding your decision in choosing the one that best suits your business needs. Moreover, selecting the best depends on your personal preferences.
