History of Healthcare in Egypt
Efforts were made in the past centuries to improve the health care system of Egypt, most of these efforts started in the 1950s. Different policies and committees were put in place by the Government to ensure that Egyptians have access to proper health care services. Until 2011, when the Arab spring began, Egypt amongst other Arab countries witnessed pro-democracy protests. The goal was to increase democracy and cultural freedom. We can see the impacts of their actions today, especially political and social impacts. After the event, their living conditions worsened. The political instability and repugnant growth in the economy affected the health situation. And many reforms that were discussed were not implemented.
The health system in Egypt is governed by the Ministry of Health and Population with five sectors of administration including central administration for the minister’s office, curative health services, population and family planning, preventative health services, and administration and finance. The public sector of the ministry consists of government and parastatal organizations. Organizations such as Health Insurance Organization (HIO) and the Curative Care Organization (CCO). HIO only covers 60% of the population and provides basic coverage through their own hospitals and clinics. The beneficiaries under HIO are employees working in the government sector, some public and private sector employees, pensioners, and widows.
Private Health Facilities
Many of the citizens seek care in private health facilities due to the low standards of care obtained in public facilities. As such, the health system became more privatized. But, only those who can afford it gained access to the care. Currently, due to increased quality care, the private sector is dominating the quota of health services provided in the country. Different factors have contributed to poor access to health care. The most prevailing factor being overpopulation, Egypt is the 2nd highest in terms of population in the MENA region.
Due to this, there’s been overdependence and pressure on resources available. Infant mortality and child mortality rates are high. The government intends to restructure the system by making health care services available and affordable for all. At the same time, efforts to improve the health indicators mentioned above amongst others are in place. Therefore, as an effort to bridge the wide gap that exists in the health sector, SehaTech developed a solution. This solution will improve the health situation in Egypt.
The Solution
SehaTech is a financial health platform that connects patients, healthcare providers and insurance companies. Most of the platforms I’ve seen usually deal with patients and healthcare providers. Sehatech is really concerned about affordable healthcare for all, hence the reason for incorporating Insurance companies. Their solution is an all-in-one platform for all three stakeholders to communicate.
The fintech company was co-founded in July 2021 by Mohamed ElShabrawy who doubles as the CEO and Mostafa Tarek. Mohamed’s managerial and leadership skills assisted in the pursuit of his passion. to improve and transform medical services. And the co-founder, Mostafa has more than 10 years of experience with the local healthcare system working in multiple roles across different hospitals in Egypt. With these talents, Egypt’s health care system will definitely witness positive change. Its mission is to ease the communication and monetary transactions between patients, healthcare providers and insurance companies.
Despite that more than half of the citizens have access to different forms of insurance, over 70% of healthcare costs are still covered out of pocket. Sehatech is set to change the narrative. With their automated claim processing and data digitization, Sehatech aims to decrease administrative costs of healthcare by 30-50%.
Easy Access…
Due to the high population in Egypt, as of 2017, physicians per 1000 people in Egypt was 0.79. Not even up to 1%. And not even up to half of the estimate proposed by WHO. At least 2.5 medical practitioners (physicians, midwives and nurses) per 1000 people will help to provide proper healthcare coverage at the primary level. Due to the gap, many patients do not have access to proper health care. This increases mortality rates and severe health conditions.
With Sehatech’s solution, patients have access to healthcare providers all over the country. I mean no long queues. No queue at all. For doctors who don’t have the chance to practice in public hospitals nor have the means to set up their own facilities, here’s a chance for them. Also, the payers are opportune to extend their service to a wider range of beneficiaries. This will in turn increase their chances of getting support from investors and partners. Once you have an account on the platform you can discuss with existing patients, healthcare providers and payers across the world. The solution provides fast, real-time, end-to-end claim processing and payments to providers in less than 48hours.
Traditional Health Facilities
The traditional health facilities have the problems of funding, embezzlement of funds, lack of remittance, loss of data and other issues. Sehatech’s solution incorporates AI and machine learning into their platform, this aims to decrease fraud and errors to less than 3%.
To ensure that Stakeholders are up to date with the right information, they are provided with regular updates and quarterly releases including the latest industry innovations. Technology is evolving daily, as such, there’s a need to stay up to date on the latest happenings in your niche. With Sehatech, you can get affordable health, convenient transactions, information, latest industry news, and you’re able to reach other stakeholders across the nation.
Stakeholders Benefits
What do you stand to gain from the solution as:
- A Payer – Higher customer satisfaction, Automated claim process, Data analysis, and fraud and error detection.
- A Healthcare Provider – More customers, faster reimbursement, less administration and cash handling and fewer negotiations on rates.
- A Patient – Easy policy management, accessibility to nationwide health providers, up to date medical history and initiating requests from the app.
Recently, SehaTech was second out of hundreds of applications at the Disruptor Lab competition. The competition focus on finding innovative ideas that solve the biggest health challenges facing Egypt. This is a pointer that the startup solution is a viable one.
As a tech startup, the website needs quite a lot of improvement. The product app is not available for downloads as well. Meanwhile, Sehatech should be able to get back to people’s inquiries within 24 hours, 48 hours is quite a long time for urgent requests.
While Egyptians are the main beneficiary of the solution, we look forward to SehaTech becoming a global solution. In the same vein, we implore investors to look into this niche.
