Nigeria has a labour-force problem. At an unemployment rate of 33.3% and an underemployment rate of 22.8%, it is clear that someone needs to do something to lessen the load. That person is Tony Onuk.
Tony Onuk is one of our favourite kinds of people here at Techtrend Africa. Like us, he recognises the need to ‘apply technology to shape lives, and he has been shaping lives for the past 7 years as CEO and co-founder of Roothub, a company committed to the training and capacity building of tech talents and the development of a flourishing entrepreneurial peer network in Nigeria and particularly, in the Niger Delta region.
Tony Onuk considers himself to be an ecosystem builder and a problem-solver. He is also a graphics designer, project manager and people empowered. He believes that ‘Technology is driving the future of everything in Africa and it is a great medium to solve the myriad problems plaguing our continent most especially, unemployment of our teeming youthful population.’
Tony, together with his team has grown Tech hub from a group of fewer than 6 people with a cramped office space and meagre resources to a force to be reckoned with, with partnerships with Google, Facebook, Co-creation Hub, Build-a-tech, to mention a few.

Roothub provides creative workspaces, resources, training and capacity building initiatives to the Nigerian youth to help them become more employable and self-reliant in the country’s thriving technology sector. It also provides support to start-ups as they build from innovative ideas to commercial success.
By 2018, over 13,000 youth had benefited from the Roothub Tech 101 project, winning the company an award in the Google Impact Challenge 2018. But Roothub has not stopped there. This year, it is equipping 2000 people with digital skills like UX Design, Data Analytics and Project Management, followed by the Roothub Internship where 200 are positioned to gain post-training work experience.
Tony Onuk is passionate about capacity development in rural areas, youth employability, and fostering peer networks. He has been a mentor at Google LaunchPad problem-solving Bootcamp since 2017 and has a Facebook Community Accelerator Award under his belt.
If you’re looking to get into tech, Tony thinks you should remember that ‘learning is a process and tech isn’t just a fad. Having a problem-solving mindset would accelerate your progress in technology.’
You should consider letting Roothub be your launchpad. Check out their website and follow them on LinkedIn, and while you’re at it, please send Tony a shout out on his page.
From us too? Definitely, he’s pretty amazing. We commend his approach to achieving SDGoals 1, 4, 8, and 10. Together we can build a sustainable life.
Techtrend Africa applauds your interesting profile. We find you extraordinary and we wish you all the best in your endeavours.
