Transnet, a South African State-owned firm, shared an update on its Thursday IT systems disruption that it has identified and isolated the source of the disruption, which impacted its container terminals. A cyber attack had disrupted operations at South Africa’s busiest container terminals on Thursday, 22nd July 2021. The latest disruption had delayed containers and auto parts, but commodities were mostly unaffected as they were in a different part of the port.
Both Transnet and the national government were reluctant to confirm whether the disruption was caused by a hack. Steve Harris, General Secretary of the United National Transport Union (UNTU) says that Transnet had to endure numerous setbacks due to the inefficient support from other key role players over the past year which has hampered the goals of its Executives to restore Transnet to the leading rail and logistics entity in Africa.
As part of efforts to support South African exports, manual port and rail operations continue. Transnet is prioritizing the export of reefer containers, primarily through the Port of Durban. As a state-owned company, Transnet continues to leave an indelible mark on the lives of all South Africans. The company’s objective is to ensure a globally competitive freight system that enables sustained growth and diversification of the country’s economy.
